The smell of iron and wet earth stung my nostrils, and I coughed. The aroma was strong down here, but it didn’t surprise me. We were surrounded by old, rusty iron pipes above us and dirt walls and floors everywhere else.
“I can’t believe Aris grew up down here,” I said to Victor, who had led us into the tunnels beneath his home.
“He played in these exact tunnels sometimes, but it wasn’t really where he was raised. We’ll get there soon.”
“And it wasn’t you who raised him?” Angel asked.
Victor was quiet for a moment, then, “I wasn’t given the chance. I thought he was dead.”
We reached a wide metal door, and he pressed numbers into a keypad. The door groaned and hissed open when he pushed on it. A smell, different from the dirty tunnels, reminded me a little of Lynx’s house. Popcorn and cookies with a hint of alcohol.
It was dark on the other side of the tunnel, but warm light greeted us at the end. As soon as we reached it, the space opened up into something I never expected. It was like we had stepped back in time. A dirt path, looking very much like a road, ran down the center of what must’ve been an old town at one point. Old signs above wooden doors were faded and gray. And yet the buildings themselves looked newer, as did the boardwalk in front of them.
Angel gasped next to me. “It looks like a section of Ironwood just as I remember it.”
“That’s because it is Ironwood,” Victor said. “After the fire, officials decided to just build Coast City upon the ruins of Ironwood. This was the only part of the city that hadn’t been destroyed by the fire. It was merely built over.” Victor motioned us forward. “My old friend Roman did most of the repairs. I just maintain it at this point. Oz also added some updates.”
He stopped in front of what looked like an old post office. “This is Aris’s room, and if you follow this path, it will take you to the Halo where he and Roman trained.”
“This is remarkable,” Angel breathed, his hand on my hip, stroking it with his thumb. Even though he was amazed by our surroundings, he still didn’t stop touching me.
“So this is where he hid when he wasn’t being a hero up above,” I remarked.
“This isn’t even the best part. Check this out.”
We followed Victor several shops down. Most of them didn’t look in use. He opened a normal-looking door and entered a room with black-painted walls. On one end was a small table and chairs, and on the other end was a wall of television screens. There must’ve been a dozen of them.
Victor flipped on several switches on a switchboard hanging on the wall.
When the screens came to life, I stepped close, eyeing each one. Half of them showed people walking in front of buildings or just sitting at the park. It was barely eight o’clock at night so there was still plenty of people out.
